Carl Trueman on The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert

In a number of blog posts on Reformation 21 and also a recent episode of the Mortification of Spin podcast, Carl Trueman has been making note of a recent book titled The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert: An English Professor’s Journey into Christian Faith by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield (Crown & Covenant Pub, 2012).  In his review Trueman says, “I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I do not agree with everything she says; but I did learn from everything she wrote. It deserves the widest possible readership.”

Back in 2007 we published Truth and Love In a Sexually Disordered World by David Searle (editor). Chapter five of this book (One Homosexual’s View) is a helpful addition to this conversation, giving one homosexual’s view of how undermining the Biblical witness on sexual ethics harms those who struggle with same-sex attraction. It’s available as a free PDF download here:  LINK.

Theology and Daily Living – A Guest Post by Lara Williams

All the seminary degrees in the world don’t matter if the truths that fill our brains don’t infiltrate our daily living. That’s the thought that really sobered me.

I had studied Hebrew and Greek. I taught Bible studies in our church and counseled women on how to walk out this Christian life. But my heart and home was a complete mess.

Behind the exterior of a happy, Christian marriage, I criticized my husband and desperately wanted to control him. I thought things that would make me blush if you knew. And even (sadly) regretted ever saying “I do.”

And our marriage slowly crumbled.

To Walk Or Stay: Trusting God Through Shattered Hopes and Suffocating Fears by Lara WilliamsMy husband fell into his own pit of sin and betrayal which left me in the darkest pit I had ever known. But it was there that God opened my eyes to the abundance found in Him alone. It was in the valley that He proved His sufficiency.

In that darkness I wrestled with God, trying to grasp His view of love and forgiveness and how that was supposed to play out in my life. I found new hope in His sovereignty, trusting Him to be faithful even over the suffering of His children.

It was a slow crawl to healing. But He faithfully restored our home. He transformed my husband. And He did a work in me that I wouldn’t trade, in spite of the pain.

All the theology is pointless if it doesn’t affect our daily living. Jesus meant it when He said to love those who hurt us. He meant it when He washed the feet of His betrayer. And He meant it when He said that we find abundant life in Him alone.

Lara WilliamsLara’s new book To Walk or Stay released this week. And though she tells a little of her and Adam’s marriage story, this book is a testimony to the faithfulness of God to meet His children in the darkest of valleys. A small book that’s dense with Truth, everyone could benefit from this refreshing read.

Church discipline is a term that is fraught with problems for the church today. With many years of pastoral experience, Robert K. Cheong has faced this issue many times. Additionally he interviewed over 30 pastors from different countries and a wide variety of church settings.

To Walk or Stay Blog Tour

This week we have several bloggers participating in a book review blog tour for To Walk or Stay: Trusting God Through Shattered Hopes and Suffocating Fears by Lara Williams. Links to the reviews will appear below as they are available:

“So. Why do I think that you should read this book? 1. This book is an excellent read for any Christian… 2. This book emphasizes trusting God to do the work… 3. This book touches on “how to be a godly wife” without being overly preachy or stuffy.”
Leah Atha (thebarefoottheologian.wordpress.com)

“This is a book I will recommend to those I counsel in struggling marriages and that I will use in my life.”
Erin Watlington-Perry

“Williams not only shared her account of how she stayed in her marriage and grew closer to Christ, she also presented a model for all women to pursue: to root themselves in biblical truths and models. I don’t think someone needs to wait for marital troubles or divorce to read this book and learn from it.”
Kim Shay (philippians314.squarespace.com)

To Walk or Stay is a book that every Christian counselor and church pastor/elder should read, especially when giving marriage advice and ministering to hurting couples. There is much hope and strength to be drawn from someone’s personal experience coupled with biblical truths, as Lara demonstrates in her book.”
Mandy Johnson (mandybakerjohnson.com)

” I must say that this book is truly God-honoring. It inspires you to draw closer to God. I have highlighted and made notes throughout the chapters. This is the kind of book you come back to, the kind you read again.”
Aisha Williams (gracefullyempowered.typepad.com)

“The truths in this book can change your heart, your marriage, your home, your calling. ”
