Christian Focus Across The Web – May 30, 2014

This week’s highlights are below:

Michael Boling Reviews Systematic Theology: Volume 2: Head over to IntelMin.org and check out Michael Boling’s review of Douglas Kelly’s new Systematic Theology: Volume 2. Michael says:

“I highly recommend Dr. Kelly’s systematic theology text to all believers but especially pastors and Bible College or Seminary students. The accessibility of Dr. Kelly’s writing style enables the laymen to have the ability to dig into complex and important issues of Christology and the plethora of scholarly information will also provide even the most seasoned theologian with years of material worth engaging. This is a book that will be referenced over and over in my own Bible study and I encourage you to pick this volume up as you will find it to be well worth your time and effort.”

Danika Cooley reviews Wielding the Sword: Many thanks to Danika Cooley for her recent review of Wielding the Sword by Linda Finlayson (CF4K, 2014). Here’s a bit of what Danika had to say in her review:

Wielding the Sword is well-written, engaging, sincere (I thank Ms. Finlayson SO much for not condescending to our young people!), and informative. I love this series. I can hardly wait for the next book! Christian Focus 4 Kids is truly doing a wonderful job producing fantastic middle grade reading materials for Christian families. Bravo.”

New Release: Basil of Caesarea: His Life & Impact by Marvin Jones

Basil of Caesarea: His Life and Impact by Marvin JonesBasil of Caesarea (329-379 AD) was a Greek Bishop in what is now Turkey. A thoughtful theologian, he was instrumental in the formation of the Nicene Creed. He fought a growing heresy, Arianism, that had found converts, including those in high positions of state. In the face of such a threat he showed courage, wisdom and complete confidence in God that we would do well to emulate today.

The Early Church Fathers series illustrates the magnificent impact that these fathers of the early church made for our world today. They encountered challenges similar to ones that we face in our postmodern world, and they met them with extraordinary values that will encourage and inspire us today.

Praise for Basil of Caesarea:

“All of the makings of an important story that Evangelicals need to hear… Dr. Jones has done… Evangelicals a great favor in writing this lucid account.”
-Michael A. G. Haykin ~ Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

“Abounding with pastoral wisdom and with the discussion of theological themes important to any era… an insightful study in human nature and how men of God respond to the shifting sands of the theological and ecclesiastical landscape…. a critical but sympathetic assessment of a remarkable pilgrim on life’s journey.”
-Paige Patterson ~ President, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas

About the Author:
Dr. Marvin Jones is the Assistant Professor of Church History and Theology, Louisiana College, Pineville, Louisiana, and the Chairman of the Christian Studies Department.

This week’s highlights are below:

Jeremy Walker reviews Living By Revealed Truth – Head over to Reformation 21 and check out Jeremy Walker’s review of Living By Revealed Truth: The Life and Pastoral Theology of Charles Haddon Spurgeon by Tom Nettles. Here’s a bit of what Jeremy had to say in his review:

“I do not know Mr Nettles, but I do think that he substantially gives us Spurgeon as he was. If not quite warts and all, it is an honest and homely portrayal, one that recognises greatness and acknowledges its Giver, and seeks to illuminate and learn from it.”

Patrick of Ireland: His Life and Impact by Michael A. G. HaykinPatrick ministered to kings and slaves alike in the culture that had enslaved him. Patrick’s faith and his commitment to the Word of God through hard times is a true example of the way that God calls us to grow and to bless those around us through our suffering. Monday Meditations: Jacob’s Ladder

Monday Meditations - George Whitefield

Jacob’s Ladder
“And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven.” -Genesis 28:12

I cannot help admiring that part of the Litany in which we pray that God would take care not only of the grown people, but also of children: God take care of yours both in body and soul. But what gave the greatest comfort to Jacob was that the Lord was on the top of the ladder, which I do not know whether it would have been so, if Jacob had not seen God there. It comforts me, I assure you, to think that whenever God shall call for me, I shall be carried by angels into Abraham’s bosom. I have often thought that whenever that time comes, that blessed, long longed-for moment comes, as soon as ever they have called upon me, my first question will be to them, “Where is my dear Master? Where is Jesus? Where is that dear Emanuel, who has loved me with an everlasting love, and has called me by his grace, and has sent you to fetch me home to see his face?” But I believe you and I shall have no occasion to ask where he is, for he will come to meet us, he will stand at the top of his ladder, to take his pilgrims in; so God was at the top of the ladder … He appears not sitting, as he is often represented in heaven, but standing: as much as to say, “Here, here, Jacob; your brother wants to kill you … but here I am ready in order to preserve you. I stand above, and I see your weariness; I see the fatigue and hardships you have yet to undergo, though you do not see it yourself. You have thrown yourself upon my providence and protection, and I will give you my word that I will stand by you.
